    The successful candidate will join our Engineering and Technologist Team in Burnaby, BC reporting directly to the General Manager.

     

    We are looking for a Failure Analysis and Materials Characterization Scientist/Engineer who both brings the needed technical skills and will fit in with a diverse group of people from around the globe.     KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Plan and assist with fuel cell stack component and materials characterization by identifying best methodologies and techniques to investigate failure mechanisms.

    2. Work closely with design engineering, quality and prototype teams to investigate product failure modes, determine root causes and lead to fast and efficient resolution of issues or interim containment actions.

    3. Support structured problem solving (8Ds) with failure analysis investigations, detailed data summary, interpretation of results, and proper communication and reporting of conclusions.

    4. Perform and/or outsource microstructural and chemical composition analysis using microscopy tools or various analytical techniques including SEM/EDS, XRD, NAA, FTIR, NMR, GC-MS, XPS, XRF.

    5. Responsible for continuous development and improvement of characterization tools, including identifying needs and implementing new methods to increase Unilia’s internal lab characterization capability, equipment, and processes.

    6. Develop new tools, protocols, and material property characterization techniques.

    7. Assist in sample preparation (e.g. cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing) and characterization testing of fuel cell components.

    8. Set-up, troubleshoot, provide training, and be responsible for calibration of characterization lab equipment to ensure proper performance.

    9. Oversee the maintenance of a clean working environment and good laboratory practices.

    10. Assess and document safety guidelines for laboratory equipment and work processes.

    11. Collect high quality and reliable data from the developed techniques.

    12. Contribute to corporate initiatives and the development of company processes and corporate culture.

     

    REQUIREMENTS:

    1. A degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics Engineering from a recognized institution.

    2. 2-5 years of relevant work experience; hands-on experience in laboratory in manufacturing/industrial setting.

    3. Hands-on experience with conventional analysis and microscopy tools (e.g. FTIR, optical microscope, SEM/EDS).

    4. Strong knowledge of chemical and materials analytical techniques:  ICP-OES, NAA, GC-MS, etc.

    5. Good understanding of statistics and quality tools and methodologies (e.g.  8D, FMEA, FTA, SPC, MSA).

    6. Mechanical aptitude to work with sensitive lab equipment.

    7. Highly organized, and meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.

    8. Excellent problem-solving ability and time management skills.

    9. Strong written and verbal communications skills.

    10. Confident working in a laboratory environment and desire to learn new methodologies.

    11. A self-starter who can work independently as well as in a team.

    12. Strong adherence to all safety policies and practices.

    13. Proficient working with Microsoft office programs

    The Senior Stack Architecture Engineer will join our Product Development Team in Burnaby, BC reporting directly to the VP of Product and Technology Development. The Senior Stack Architecture Engineer will be responsible for design and function of fuel cell components, performing fuel cell operability trade and analysis of test data, developing, and improving electrochemical models, and supporting verification and validation plans for new cost reduction initiatives. Projects work may include catalyst development, electrode assembly process development, and bipolar plate design and manufacturing development. The successful candidate will bring proven expertise on fuel cell stack or system design, with superior stakeholder management skills and strong understanding of the product life cycle, from concept to start of production and beyond.     KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Lead and collaborate with a global team on the development of innovative fuel cell systems

    2. Lead and/or support the requirements definition process and work together with our technical team to ensure the design of fuel cell stacks meets customer requirements

    3. Deliver product and interface documents and stack specifications aligned to timeline and quality objectives

    4. Understand and direct the stack assembly design in conjunction with technical experts.  

    5. Support development of testing protocols to validate the design against customer requirements

    6. Analyze performance, troubleshoot failure modes, and apply lessons learned in an iterative development process

    7. Keep stakeholders aware of changes, interface with suppliers understand on design for manufacturability

    8. Identify and mitigate key design risks 

    9. Provide customer support through product launch and throughout the product life cycle 

    10. Support supplier landscape benchmarking activities and competitive analysis 

    11. Maintaining and developing knowledge of cutting-edge technology and competitive landscape for bipolar plate design 

    12. Lead stack development with a focus on continuous improvement and cost reduction

    13. Interface with stack team engineers, systems engineering, quality, manufacturing and purchasing teams

    14. Manage product cycles from concept to market launch, including testing and post-launch support

    15. Support prototype builds and tear down analysis of test or field stacks

    16. Perform stack validation and verification

    17. Collaborate on system development related to stack, for example in humidification system design, stack housing requirements and design, freeze start-up (assisted vs unassisted), customer field validation, etc.


    REQUIREMENTS:

    1. An Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field

    2. 8+ years of experience in relevant industry

    3. 5+ fuel cell experience with strong understanding of stack operating conditions, strategies, and testing & validation protocols

    4. Significant experience with common automotive engineering design and analysis tools such as DFMEA, PFMEA, and 8D

    5. Demonstrated ability to influence and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally

    6. Strong technical leadership and mentoring skills

    The Senior Unit Cell Engineer will join our Product Development Team in Burnaby, BC reporting directly to the General Manager. The Senior Unit Cell Engineer will be responsible for:

    1. Bipolar plate & interface plate design concept development, layouts, trade-off studies, technology, and manufacturing process evaluation 

    2. Specifying and owning CAD models and engineering drawings that conform to requirements

    3. Integration Membrane Electrode Framed Assemblies and sealing components to create unit cell designs


    To , the successful candidate must have a comprehensive understanding of the unit cell that includes a complete awareness of trade-offs between different component options: plate, MEA, sealing concept, materials, manufacturing methods. To succeed the incumbent will take a leadership role in our product development team and communicate effectively with the customer our and our manufacturing department to optimize unit a cell design.

    TYPICAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES,AND ACTIVITIES:

    1. Support and/or lead the design and qualification of membrane electrode assembly components (e.g., gas diffusion layer [GDL], catalyst, ionomer, membrane).

    2. Perform data analysis to provide input into the selection of component suppliers.
